ABOUT OUR PARISH

A Centre of Excellence for the Worship and Service of the Diocese of the Riverina

The War Memorial Cathedral Church of St Alban the Martyr seeks to be a prayerful heart at the centre of the life and ministry of the Diocese of Riverina and plays a significant role in the history of the City of Griffith.

The parish itself was established in 1920 and offers a place of worship and ministry for the people of Griffith and the surrounding areas of Yenda, Yoogali, Hanwood and Rankins Springs. The present cathedral church was built in 1954 to designs by the Melbourne-based architect Louis R. Williams, and is one of the architectural treasures of the city.

Building a sense of connection and belonging is important to us, not only for our parishioners, but also for the wider community, which is why our cathedral church doors stand open daily for all. Our Parish Op Shop seeks not only to provide for the needs of our community by selling reasonably-priced second-hand clothing and goods, but also gives a portion of profits to support the work of local charities.

Expressing our love for God is often best enjoyed through the arts and so we are proud to have a choir, team of bell ringers, organists, servers’ guild, and volunteer florists, as well as our hospitality team. We also host occasional concerts and artistic events in the Cathedral space, celebrating the rich diversity of the life of our region.

We’re always keen to see new faces and know you’ll find a warm welcome at any of our services.

About Our Parish

The township of Barham was settled from 1843 and was officially gazetted as a village in 1882. In line with the extension to the railways at the time and further settlement in the Riverina region, it is thought that the first Church was built in Barham in 1908. One of only two humble mud brick churches in the area, the church of St John the Evangelist was built voluntarily by the townspeople. In 1929, the Parish of Barham was officially declared and was brought under the care of Diocese of Riverina.

The current church building of St John the Evangelist began construction in 1956, and was opened and dedicated in 1957. We continue to hold services here as well as at three other churches in the Parish every Sunday.

The Reverend Micheal (Mike) Perrott

OUR CLERGY

Reverend Micheal (Mike) Perrott

Rev’d Micheal and his wife Kerrie came from Port Macquarie to the Riverina in September 2011 to minister in the Parishes of Narrandera and Coolamon/Ganmain.

The Riverina was familiar territory, as Rev’d Micheal had spent many early years in Griffith with his mother’s family. Rev’d Micheal also worked in the region in the mid 1960’s with the Bank of NSW as it was known then. It was during these years he spent time in Yenda, Hillston and Leeton.

Rev’d Micheal has a passion for the gospel and fulfilling the role he has been called to. He’s a keen photographer, with a real interest in landscape and wildlife photography which he believes shows the beauty of God’s creation through this art medium. Rev’d Micheal had spent a number of years as a professional photographer amongst other roles prior to entering the ministry.

About Our Parish

Our parish is situated in a farming community and consists of three churches; St Andrews Coolamon, St Peters Ganmain and St Matthews Grong Grong.

The parish family is involved in many activities and groups in town which provide opportunities for sharing the Jesus story.

In our worship we include all age groups and blends the differing styles into our services with due respect for the traditions of the church and guided by scripture.

OUR CLERGY

About Our Rector

Fr Robert has been St Peter’s much-loved Rector since 2003. A former English/History teacher and attracted to all things historical, Fr Robert has ensured milestones reached are celebrated in style, including the Centenary of St Peter’s in 2012. Fr Robert’s past as an organist has ensured the continued support of the St Peter’s Choristers. He has encouraged the staging of many events which provide fellowship and enjoyment and is a very active member of the parish social life.

Fr Robert was ordained Deacon at Saint Alban’s Cathedral, Griffith in 1993, priested in October 1994, served as Archdeacon of Murrumbidgee from 2006 – 2014, as a canon of the Cathedral from 2019-2023, as Rural Dean of Anderson Deanery from 2021-2023, and was collated as Archdeacon and Vicar General in 2022. He has served in the parishes of Griffith, Corowa, and Coleambally – Darlington Point. Fr Robert’s devotion to his calling and congregation can be witnessed in the number of Masses he offers every week, treating each one as a celebration, as well as in the energy he brings to all aspects of parish life.

About Our Parish

The parish of Leeton was established in 1912.

The original church of St. Peter was constructed from mud brick in 1913 and was in use, until the construction of the present church.  A memorial commemorating the original church is found at the front of the Oak Street car park.  The present church of St. Peter’s was constructed in 1973.

The Architect was Mr Louis Reginald Williams of Melbourne.  Louis Williams designed many churches and developed the style known as Australian Gothic.  He made an emphasis on space and light. St Peter’s was the last church designed by him at the age of 83 years.  St. Peter’s was consecrated on 27 November 1982.

In 1944 the parishes of Whitton and Leeton were combined.  St. John’s Church, Whitton was established in 1890 and closed in 2020. The Chapel of St John & All Souls at the rear of St Peter’s was established as a memorial to the Whitton church and congregation. From 1935 until 1999, the Church of St. Mary, the Virgin Yanco was part of the parish. A memorial to this church and congregation can be found in the porch of St. Peter’s.

In 2016, the parish became responsible for the pastoral care of the community of Barellan.

Priest with Oversight

Reverend Micheal Perrott

Rev’d Micheal and his wife Kerrie came from Port Macquarie to the Riverina in September 2011 to minister in the Parishes of Narrandera and Coolamon/Ganmain.

The Riverina was familiar territory, as Rev Micheal had spent many early years in Griffith with his mother’s family. Rev Mike also worked in the region in the mid 1960’s with the Bank of NSW as it was known then.

The Parish of St Thomas in the Riverina has been serving the town and surrounding district since 1880. The church and rectory date from that time and still show our historic connections with the town.

In this parish the people are the church and through our worshiping and fellowshipping we are building up the family and bringing the message of Jesus to the people of our patch through word and deed.

The parish family is involved in many activities and groups in town which provide opportunities for sharing the Jesus story.

In our worship we include all age groups and blends the differing styles into our services with due respect for the traditions of the church and guided by scripture.
